The Great Gatsby Essay

In The Great Gatsby it is shown that Jay Gatsby was poor and would do anything to be with Daisy. He wanted to show her he was successful and that he deserves to be with her. This was his true desire. In order to succeed he first thought about what he would need to do to become successful in life. This is as some people would say "The American Dream." Something that Americans believe can be achieved through hard work and becoming successful. It is shown that he has done many things that would acknowledge him as being "successful." I would agree that his desire for success is defined from evidence of the American Dream and obsession.
Throughout the novel Jay Gatsby has shown that he is madly in love with Daisy. She was the main the reason Jay Gatsby wanted to be successful in life. Jay Gatsby strived to become rich in order to show Daisy he is worthy of being with her. This is evidence that the American Dream is part of his desire for success. Being rich is mostly always the answer of being successful in life. If I tell a random person if they had one wish or how they would think of someone as "successful" they would say "becoming rich." Although others would disagree, many would agree.
Another part that I would agree about his desire for success is his obsession. His obsession with Daisy led to his success. He wanted to be a person he was not just so that Daisy would love him. He was insecure about his wealth and wanted to be a man of greater social status and wealth. He was obsessed with being a perfect man and having a great life because of Daisy. Daisy changed Jay Gatsby into wanting to become the man he has become. "A rich successful man."
Gatsby became rich and successful because he wanted to show the girl he loves what he has become. Today everybody works hard for their loved ones. It is sad that statistically girls would rather go with a man who is rich then a man who isn't but that is reality. A lot men show off their wealth nowadays to impress a girl they like. Jay Gatsby symbolizes our culture in this way because he wants to show off to Daisy just like a man would show off to his crush nowadays.
This is why Jay Gatsby's desire for success was defined from evidence of the American dream and his obsession with Daisy. Part of his desire for success was mainly because of Daisy which led to him pursuing the American Dream.
