Literature Analysis: Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry
1. The story is about a family who are discriminated by white people because of their dark brown skin. The family is called the Logan family and they work very hard to keep their farmland that they are proud of. The story shows the hardships that they face while being racially discriminated. It is being told by Cassie, the author. She is the daughter of the Logan family and the narrator.
2.The theme of the novel is "Be proud of who you are even if others are not"
This it the theme because Cassie, who is of dark skin, never regrets being dark skinned even thought she suffers from other because of it.
3.The tone in this story is very sad and serious. Throughout the story I can understand how blacks feel when they are being treated poorly. As I read the tone gets sadder and sadder because it perfectly details how they suffer. It also gets very serious because there are parts when death is being hinted.
4.(1) The first literary technique I observed was foreshadowing. As I read the story and as I read about the whites harassing the Logan children I new that they were going to plan something against the whites. This is because they were really brave and I could feel their anger against the whites that bullied them. This lead to a little trick or prank by the Logan children on the whites. They sabotage the bus.
(2) The second literary technique I observed was a metaphor. It stated,"As a bus bore down on him spewing clouds of red dust like a huge yellow dragon breathing fire." This means that as a bus passed by its wheels blew a large amount of dust like a dragon breathing fire.
(3) A third literary technique I observed was alliteration. The alliteration is,"Stacy stood swaying on the Strawberry road."This shows multiple words that have the same sound at the beginning of the pronunciation.
(4) A fourth literary technique I found was a simile. "When Papa saw us, he bean running swiftly, easily, like the wind." This compared the father to the wind which are completely different things.
(5) A fifth literary technique I found was hyperbole. "But, Mama, that Lillian Jean ain't got the brains of a flea." This is a unrealistic statement, because somebody can't have the brains of a flea. It is implying that she is dumb.
